Services Provided

The Vancouver Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplant Program is structured to provide comprehensive specialized multidisciplinary care for people with thoracic disease:

  1. THORACIC CANCER CLINICS: for lesions in the lungs, trachea, esophagus, stomach, mediastinum, chest wall, pericardium, and pleural space suspicious for cancer

  2. Screening for lung cancer via the BCCRC 'BC Lung Screen Trial"

  3. Esophageal pH/impedance & Manometry testing

  4. Benign foregut disease including: giant hiatus hernia, achalasia and esophageal motility disorders, benign esophageal tumours and cysts

  5. Surgical lung biopsy, and lung transplantation

  6. Surgical biopsy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) biopsy of mediastinal lymphadenopathy

  7. Congenital anomalies of the tracheobronchial tree, lung, and esophagus in the adult

  8. Chest injury repair

  9. Acquired benign conditions such as myasthenia gravis, hyperparathyroidism due to mediastinal parathyroid adenoma, and sepsis in the pleural space, mediastinum, chest wall and lungs

  10. Proximal airway disease, such as benign tracheal stenosis

  11. Benign esophageal diseases requiring esophageal function assessment

  12. Emphysema requiring lung volume reduction operation

Initial appointments with our thoracic doctors are 30 minutes in length and for consultation only. 

No procedures will be done at this visit.

The doctor will review history, completed investigations, conduct an appropriate examination, and discuss a management plan.

Patients must bring a list of current medications, and an adult English language translator if not fluent in English.

Helping You Get Healthy

All thoracic surgeries and thoracic procedures are conducted at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) by our advanced fellowship trained Thoracic Surgeons. 

In the operating room, fellowship trained cardiothoracic anesthesiologists conduct all elective thoracic surgical anesthesia. Prior to surgery we arrange for patient assessment in the VGH pre-anesthetic clinic.

After surgery, all thoracic patients recover on the 12th floor Chest Centre at VGH in the Jim Pattison Pavilion. A highly specialized  multidisciplinary "Tower-12 Chest Centre" team of Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dieticians, and Pharmacists, care for thoracic patients along with thoracic surgeon and respirologist doctors.
