Dr. McGuire is an Advanced Thoracic Fellowship Trained active staff thoracic surgeon at Vancouver General Hospital and the University of British Columbia. Dr. McGuire is a successful researcher with specialty interests in lung cancer, esophageal cancer, minimally invasive surgical technology (keyhole surgery), diseases of the thymus, esophageal function and other surgical diseases of the chest.
Dr. McGuire‘s current research projects focus on lung cancer including, biomarkers, and thoracic surgical epidemiology.
Dr. McGuire's Education:
After graduating from the University of Toronto School of Medicine, Dr. McGuire successfully completed General Surgery Residency at Queens University. This was followed by specialized Thoracic Surgery Residency and then another Advanced Thoracic Surgery Fellowship in our Nation's Capitol at the University of Ottawa within the Division of Thoracic Surgery. The success with advanced fellowship training provided Dr McGuire unique expertise in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery for cancers of the lung, esophagus and chest cavity, as well as expertise in endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and esophageal function testing.
A passion to contribute to medical knowledge and the practice of Academic Medicine lead Dr McGuire to complete a formal Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology with the University of London (LSHTM), United Kingdom.
The Road Home:
A Vancouverite born and raised, after years training, Dr. McGuire was recruited home to provide the ideal combination of tertiary level advanced thoracic surgical expertise and passion for cancer research for the benefit of British Columbians.
Since this time, Dr. McGuire has been on faculty at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver General Hospital as a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada board certified Academic Thoracic Surgeon.

Dr. McGuire provides comprehensive specialized care for people with thoracic disease, including:
RAPID ACCESS THORACIC CANCER CLINICS: for lesions in the lungs, trachea, esophagus, stomach, mediastinum, chest wall, pericardium, and pleural space suspicious for cancer
Esophageal pH/impedance & Manometry testing
Benign foregut disease including: giant hiatus hernia, achalasia and esophageal motility disorders, benign esophageal tumours and cysts
Surgical lung biopsy
Surgical biopsy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) biopsy of mediastinal lymphadenopathy
Congenital anomalies of the tracheobronchial tree, lung, and esophagus in the adult
Chest injury repair
Acquired benign conditions such as myasthenia gravis, hyperparathyroidism due to mediastinal parathyroid adenoma, and sepsis in the pleural space, mediastinum, chest wall and lungs
Proximal airway disease, such as benign tracheal stenosis
Benign esophageal diseases requiring esophageal function assessment
Emphysema requiring lung volume reduction operation

The initial appointment with Dr McGuire is about 30 minutes in length and for consultation only.
No procedures will be done at this visit.
Dr. McGuire will review your history, completed investigations, conduct an appropriate examination, and discuss your management plan.

Helping You Get Healthy
All of Dr. McGuire's thoracic surgeries and thoracic procedures are conducted at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH).
In the operating room, fellowship trained cardiothoracic anesthesiologists conduct your thoracic surgical anesthesia. Prior to surgery Dr McGuire's office will arrange an assessment in the VGH pre-anesthetic clinic.

The Care You Deserve
After surgery, all of Dr. McGuire's patients recover on the 12th floor Chest Centre at VGH in the Jim Pattison Pavilion. A highly specialized multidisciplinary "Tower-12 Chest Centre" team of Nurses, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dieticians, and Pharmacists, help care for Dr. McGuire's thoracic patients while in hospital.
